Safer Internet Day (SID) is celebrated as an initiative of the European Commission since 2004 and aims to initiate and promote action to secure access of children and young people to online resources. Over the years, SID has become a landmark event in the online safety calendar. Starting as an initiative of the EU SafeBorders project in 2004 and taken up by the Insafe network of European Safer Internet Centres as one of its earliest actions in 2005, Safer Internet Day has grown beyond its traditional geographic zone and is now celebrated in more than a 100 countries worldwide, and across six of the world's seven continents. For a complete list of countries and institutions involved in SID celebrations please visit www.saferinternetday.org.
In Poland, the Safer Internet Day since 2005, is organized by the Polish Safer Internet Centre (NASK and the Empowering Children Foundation). The main partner of the event is the Orange Foundation.
SID aims to initiate and promote activities for the safe access of children and young people to online resources, to familiarize parents, teachers and educators with the issues of online safety and to promote the positive use of the internet.
Each year, PSIC is undertaking a number of activities to help achieve these goals. One of them is the organization of the SID conference for media, professionals working with children and key stakeholders. During the celebration of the SID Polish SIC encourages schools, NGOs, companies and individuals to support the project by organizing local initiatives (e.g. educational activities, happenings, information campaigns, competitions) for the safety of young internet users. All initiatives can be registered via SID website (www.dbi.pl). Each year, wide promotion of the SID throughout the country results in undertaking a great number of local initiatives (1949 in 2017 with more than 1 200 000 children, youths, parents and teachers engaged). The PSIC supports nationwide celebrations of SID by sending educational and promotional packages (i.a. DVD with a set of educational tools, SID poster, poster with safety tips) to all local organizers of initiatives, who register via SID website. Each year valuable prizes are foreseen for the most innovative initiatives. Local organizers also receive SID certificate.
